Free storage space in Linux
I am a newbie in Linux. I have recently installed Ubuntu in my computer. Everything works fine but i suppose most of the critical job is still done by Linux command. I was wondering how can i check the free space on my hard drive using Linux command.
-Sam
You are right Sam. You still need to run various commands in command shell in Linux. In your case, you can use "df" command. "df" stands for disk free. This will show total space and available space on a file system. You can use this command for any flavor of Linux and Unix operating systems. You can also use arguments with the "df" for advanced use of the command.

My address book in Ms Outlook doesn't show my contacts
I have imported address book from my yahoo and Google account to MS Outlook 2003. Now when i write new email or forward a existing email, i don't see any of my contacts in the address book. But if i click on Contacts in the left pane of outlook screen, it shows all of my contacts. can anyone help me. what is the problem and how can i fix it.
-Rahul
Probably, there is no directory or address book created already. Open the Ms Outlook and go to Tools -> E-mail Accounts. You will see a wizard to create/change E-mail Account and Create/change Directory or address book. Select "Add a new directory or Address Book" and click Next. Then select Additional Address Book and then click Next. Select Outlook address book and click Next. A new address book for outlook will be created. Now go to Tools -> Address Book. "Contacts" will be shown under Show Names from: Outlook Address Book. Now your address book should be showing your contacts you just imported from yahoo or gmail CSV.

How to start "Wireless Zero Configuration"
I am getting this message when i am trying to connect my laptop to wireless access point. "Wireless cannot configure this wireless connection. If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software. If you want windows to configure this wireless connection, start the wireless zero configuration (WZC). For more information about starting the WZC service, see article 871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on the microsoft.com website."
-Rahul
I think you have got third party software installed in your laptop to configure the wireless adaptor. Third party software seems to have disabled the Microsoft's Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) service. You need to re-enable it.
Follow the steps below to enable the WZC on your laptop.
1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then click OK.
2. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.
3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
4. In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK.
Some wireless adapters' configuration software deletes the WZC service. If that is the case, you can try this fix by editing registry value.
Caution: Registry editing can be dangerous, use it on your own risk.
1. Click Start - Run and type reg. Then click OK.
2. Browse this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\WZCSVC
3. Then, create a DWORD value and name it "Start" and set it to 2.

SM Bus Controller
I have got Dell Optiplex GX520. I have formatted the hard disk and re-installed the windows XP. Now when i go to Device Manager and check for devices, there is yellow question sign with SM Bus Controller. I tried downloading many driver from dell support but no one worked. Can anybody help me identify which device is it? Thanks
- Alex
SMBus is the System Management Bus defined by Intel in 1995. It is used in personal computers and servers for low-speed system management communications.
Download the appropriate Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility and install it.
Intel chipset software installation utility installs Windows *inf files to your computer. These files outlines to the oeparting system how to configure the Intel Chipset Components which ensures the following features functions properly:
- Core PCI and ISAPNP services.
- PCIe support.
- IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 storage support
- SATA storage support
- USB support
- Identification of Intel Chipset components in the device manager.

The Windows Installer Service Could not be Accessed
I am getting this error "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed". This occurs whenever i am trying to install or un-install any program on my Windows XP system. I have no idea about this problem. Can anybody help me?
- Jon
This error shows up only if you are using Windows Installer "Microsoft Software Installation package (.msi)" to Add/Remove program. The possible cause for this error may be-
- Windows XP in Safe mode.
- The Windows Installer Service that is included with Windows XP is unregistered or damaged.
- The Windows Installer files that are on your hard disk are damaged or missing.
- The incorrect permission issue on the related registry keys that Windows Installer trying to access may also cause this error.

can't send email
Not sure what got changed or set by mysterious clicks but I can't send email. I can get it and I can even send from another computer but when I try to send from this particular box I get: An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1). Please check the message recipients and try again. Thanks.
- Suedoh
You have not mentioned anything about which email service or email client you are using to send email. If you think the problem is due to some wrong setting in the operating sytem, then i would suggest you to perform System Restore of your operating system prior to the date, you think, problem started. you can start System Restore by clicking on Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

Compressed (zipped) Folder
I have got Windows XP operating system installed in my computer. I want to compress some of my files and folder and email them. But when i right click on the folder and select "Send To", i don't see the option - "Compressed (zipped)Folder". How to activate that option so that i can compress my files? Any help will be appreciated.
- Suresh
The most probable reason is that Zip is not activated. You can activate it by this command. I have tested it and it works with Windows XP.
Go to Start -> Run : Type this command and hit enter
regsvr32 %windir % \System32\Zipfldr.dll
If this doesn't work, then use this command to uninstall the Zipflder.dll:
regsvr32 / u %windir % \System32\Zipfldr.dll
Restart your computer and then run this command:
regsvr32 %windir % \System32\Zipfldr.dll
Note: Example of %windir% is c:\Windows\

svchost.exe - generic host application error for win32 process
I am getting this error at the startup of my WIndows XP: "Generic Hots Process for Win32 Services. Generic Host Process for Win32 services encountered a problem and needed to close." What can be the possible cause of this error?
- Alex
This error is caused by Windows update. For some reason, Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) notification (KB905474) is not installed properly in your computer. You need to do the manual update of Windows XP at Windows Update. Choose Express update and then install them. Hopefully, This will fix the problem. You may also get a message like this: "You've hidden important update. You've asked us not to show you one or more high priority updates but your computer might be at risk until they are installed. Restore them Now." If you get this message, just click on Restore them Now. It will install WGA and other high priorities updates and your problem should be fixed. If nothing works, Download the Update for Windows XP (927891) package and install it.
Check out Microsoft Knowledge base article for this problem too. This is basically caused by Windows update. You have received an access violation when you tried to install an update from Windows Update.
SYMPTOMS: When you try to install an update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update, you experience the following symptoms: The system may appear to become unresponsive when Windows Update scans for updates that use Windows Installer. You receive an access violation error in the Svchost.exe process. This access violation stops the Server service and the Workstation service. A memory leak occurs when Windows Update scans for updates that use Windows Installer. Windows Update scans take a very long time, sometimes hours, to complete.

Access is denied in window xp
I have a computer with Windows XP operating system installed in it. Due to some reason, it doesn't work now. I am not able to boot windows xp any more. But i have some very important data and pictures in it. I pulled out the hard disk and connected the hard drive to another computer. It is being used as slave. With this configuration, i am able to save many of my files but i can't access my profile which was an administrative profile. I get this error - "Access is denied". Please help me!
- Aman
This is because the folders were created on NTFS file system volume with a Security ID which doesn't match with the Windows XP on your new computer. This can be fixed by taking the ownership of that folder. Follow the steps below to take the ownership of the folder: 1. Turn OFF the Simple File Sharing. By default, it is enabled in Windows XP Professional. (For more information, Read Simple files sharing.) 2. Then, Right Click on the folder you want to take ownership of and click Properties. 3. Click the Security tab.Click OK on the Security message if any appears. 4. Then, Click on Advanced, and after that, click the Owner tab. 5. Now, Select your user name, Administrator or Administrators group from the name list (i.e Change owner to). Select the Check box "Replace owner on subcontainers and Objects" and Click OK. 6. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box. Note: You should also change the permissions and security settings and re-apply them.

Floppy drive icon disappeared
I was saving info on my floppy disc when my computer froze. When I restarted my computer I tryed to open floppy A:\ drive but the icon was gone. Typed in A:\ on my search panel and an alert poped up witch said "A:\ refers to a location that is un avalible". I need help now. Icant find it anywhere.
- Skwekel
The reason to disappear the A:\ drive icon is that your system has not found the drive itself. There may be two obvious reasons to that. First, the drive might have been disabled from the BIOS setting or secondly, the floppy drive is not installed properly and powered ON. Cables may be loose. Open the computer box and make sure that it is physically connected properly. Also, check the BIOS setting and make sure that it is enabled.
